Getting older can cause those of us in the 50+ crowd to buy a boatload of products that promise to thicken hair, tighten skin, brighten teeth and do whatever else you can think of. I don’t know about you, but I have a ton of items under my sink, in my medicine cabinet and hall closet that I’ve purchased based on recommendations from magazines, TV commercials, and beauty blogs. But lately, I’ve been trying to simplify my life wherever I can and now it’s time to focus on my beauty regimen. So I’ve decided to go back to the basics and stick with what works best for me. Here’s what’s in my arsenal:
Body Exfoliation I give dry skin brushing an A+ for polishing and toning my skin and improving my circulation.
Face Exfoliation The Clarisonic Mia is more gentle on my face than any facial exfoliant I’ve ever used and my skin always looks brighter when I’m done.
Moisturizers I’m a big fan of Josie Moran’s Whipped Argan Oil because it’s pure, light, and it makes my skin feel like butter. Plus it’s unscented so I don’t have to worry about it competing with my favorite perfume. I will admit that this brand of argan oil is pricey, but a little dab will do you. Sweet almond oil is just as effective, but much less expensive.
Teeth WhitenerThe Supersmile System is perfect for my sensitive teeth since I’m not the best candidate for traditional teeth whitening methods which can increase sensitivity. This product is gentle on the teeth and gums and has helped this coffee drinker keep her winning smile.
Once I’ve buffed, brushed, and moisturized, I fill in my eyebrows, put on mascara add a little under eye concealer and top it off with my bright red MAC Ruby Woo lipstick and I’m ready to go!
So, how have you adjusted your beauty regimen over time?
Anyone who know me well, knows that I love a great coat. I used to have at least 20 but I think I’ve narrowed them down to about half, which is still saying a lot. The thing is, dressing well should not stop with what goes under your coat. It should carry through to your exterior regardless of the weather. If you plan to take the time to put together a great outfit, why ruin your entire look by throwing on the first coat within reach? I have coats for protection against extremely cold weather, coats for tailored outfits, coats to be worn with bulky winter sweaters, a super long coat to cover those long dresses and skirts and of course a dressy coat for evenings out on the town. Here are just a few in my collection.

BCBG Tailored Coat
Peruvian Connection Blanket Coat
Steven Searle Alpaca Coat
BCBG Black Lace Trench
This is a great time to purchase coats on sale while stores are beginning to stock spring merchandise. While your at it, don’t forget your scarves, gloves and hats. That’s where your real personality comes in!
Now that the parties have ended, the leftovers have been tossed, and the decorations packed away, it’s time to start looking forward to things to come in the new year. The first of the year always makes me want to get organized so that I can plan ahead with an uncluttered mind and living space. I had a packed holiday season with my annual hosting of Thanksgiving, planning my daughter’s sweet sixteen birthday party and getting ready for Christmas. Once we made it through the all of the celebrations, my husband and I tackled a major decluttering of our basement and I’m still working on shredding 20 years worth of files. When all was said and done, I had little time and even less desire to write blog posts.
Now that 2015 is here, I’m ready to slow down, simplify my life, and enjoy the view. My mantra for the year is “make everyday count”. I want to be consistent with posting to my blog, but I also want to consistently attend my yoga class as well as start back with my weekly bible study. For me, moving into the new year is about having a life of balance. Prioritizing those things that bring value to my life and eliminating the things that don’t and making sure that my mind, body and spirit are nurtured in the process.
What’s your goal for 2015?
Somehow, October got away from me. Every time I thought about writing a new blog post there was something else going on that took my attention. The month was filled with all good things though, birthday celebrations, a weekend trip to Florida, my college homecoming and a college visit for my high schooler. Here are the highlights from my fun-filled month.

Fall is officially here! It’s time to put away those neutral lip shades and brighten up our faces with some colorful crimson lipsticks. Above are four of my favorites.
